The presence of a couple of wolves at the gates of Marseille confirmed
Wolves are making a comeback in France, expanding their territory more and more over time. If on the glimpses as far as the west of France, they have more recently been listed at the gates of Marseille, in the Calanques national park. Their presence was confirmed by the wolf-lynx network between December 2020 and February 2021, by video traps installed in the park. These are two adult individuals, a male and a female.
The unknown factor in the equation is now whether the wolf pair will settle permanently in the national park. “The Calanques massif has been qualified by the French Biodiversity Office (OFB) as an area of presence to be confirmed at the end of winter 2020-2021”, Charles Vergobbi, deputy director of the Directorate, told AFP. department of the territories and the sea of Bouches-du-Rhône.
A priori, the wolves of the park fed on wild boars, the presence of which is very widespread in the creeks. There is little breeding, apart from a few flocks of sheep. For the rest, deer, foxes or hares will be a delicacy for predators. If the wolf has been observed everywhere in France, the OFB confirms the gray wolf population is progressing, with a population estimated at around 620 adult individuals at the end of winter 2021, against 580 a year earlier.
Finally, these are the estimates because the reports of wolves continue to increase everywhere and some territories already bear the scars in Drôme, the Vosges, the Pyrenees and the Var!
