Portugal presides over European association of motorway concessionaires – O Jornal Económico
António Nunes de Sousa was elected president of the European association of motorway concessionaires.
The president of APCAP was elected at the last General Assembly, during which another Portuguese was chosen to coordinate the international working group on tolls.
Portugal will thus command the destinations of ASECAP – European Association of Motorway Concessionaires next year.
“António Nunes Sousa, president of APCAP – Portuguese Association of Toll Highways or Bridges Concessionary Societies, is the new member of ASECAP – European Association of Toll Road Infrastructure Operators”, says the association in a statement.
The election was held on December 14, during the last General Assembly of this body, which brings together 135 companies from 20 countries. Another Portuguese, Pedro Pinto (Ascendi), was chosen to coordinate the working group on tolls, collections, fees and concessions.
APCAP – Portuguese Association of Toll Highways or Bridges Concessionary Companies – is affiliated with ASECAP and constitutes one of the most representative associations in the sector at European level, aggregating 24 national concessionary or sub-concessionaire companies of highways or bridges in the Mainland, Azores and Madeira, responsible for managing a network with a length of 3,580 km.
“The climate and environmental emergencies, as well as the health and economic crises, the consequences of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, have placed transport at the center of the European agenda. Road infrastructure has an important role to play in achieving the ambitious goal achieved by the European Union of being carbon neutral by 2050 and I will take advantage of the work and initiatives of my predecessors to highlight the sector’s contribution to the Economy and Society”, stated in a statement António Nunes de Sousa, who will take over the ASECAP destinations in January.
“I am particularly honored to serve as President of ASECAP in the year 2022 and I can assure our members that I will put all my commitment and energy to face the new challenges that lie ahead”, adds the manager.
Vice-presidents Josef Fiala (ASFINAG – Austria) and Julián Núñez (SEOPAN – Spain) were also elected for the executive, as well as ex-president Massimo Schintu (AISCAT – Italy).
For the positions of vice-chairmen of the committee chaired by Pedro Pinto (Ascendi) are representatives of the counterparts ASFA (France), ASFINAG (Austria) and Hellastron (Greece).
Portugal is one of the seven founding countries of ASECAP, along with France, Italy, Austria, Spain, Greece and Norway.
Since the creation of the association, in 1973, this is the fourth time that Portugal assumes the presidency. Previous mandates were held by António Martins (1984-1988), João Bento (2005-2007) and José Costa Braga (2016-2017).
