Amanda Serrano: “It’s time for Katie Taylor, baby”
Amanda Serrano is ready for the biggest fight of her career.
TAMPA, Florida – Two things needed to happen for the potential Katie Taylor-Amanda Serrano’s undisputed lightweight title fight for women to be more than just a dream. First, Taylor had to beat Firuza Sharipova on December 11th. Second, Serrano had to take care of business on Saturday against Miriam Gutierrez.
Taylor handled Sharipova with relative ease. And Serrano beat and bled Gutierrez for ten rounds to make ends meet. Serrano went into the media room for her post-match press conference, beaming from ear to ear, and the expression did not leave her face the whole time she was in the stands.
Serrano led the Gutierrez competition and remained very respectful of her. Despite everyone’s best efforts to keep the conversation going on Taylor alone, Serrano did not want to bite. But when the referees read the scorecards she won, the world champion in seven divisions was ready to start hyping what the ladies queer fight is to do even though both camps are still in negotiations.
“We’re both pound-for-pound top three,” Serrano told media members, including DAZN News. “Some people have me on two or three. It does not matter how you look at it. Two pound-for-pound girls go on it. You have an undisputed champion and a world champion in seven divisions that go in a row.
“It’s the mega-fight that will blow off the roof. We’re looking at Madison Square Garden, the main room. It’s going to be a great night.”
If the match crosses the finish line, Taylor (20-0, 6 KOs) would look to make the sixth defense of his four belts while Serrano (42-1-1, 30 KOs) would drive a 28-match winning streak into the most important of their two careers. When she left, Serrano had one last thing to say.
“It’s time for Katie Taylor, honey,” Serrano said excitedly.
