some channels dry up. And then comes the fog too, gondoliers in trouble
VENICE – The classic day of wolves, that of yesterday a Venice, with the fog dropped in the early afternoon and the water at very low levels, to the point that some canals have remained almost dry. At 16.35 the water level reached minus 50 centimeters above sea level measured at Punta della Salute. Not an absolute record, but enough to bring the depths of some channels to the surface. In the next few days the situation should improve, Tomorrow is expected -40 at 17.05 and Monday – 35 at 17.35.
As for the fog, on the other hand, it made itself felt especially after lunch, getting up just before dark and forcing Actv to trigger the splitting of the lines in the Grand Canal, as it had already happened on Friday afternoon when it was there. was the first split of the season. However, the company did not report any particular problems.
TO THE STATIONS
Problems for gondoliers due to yesterday’s exceptional low tide. The difficulties became evident in making and pick up customers, so much so that during the day the work was practically nil. In some stations the troubles were revealed in the lower and worn part of the poles. Then there is another question, explained by the gondoliers Ivo Redolfi Tezzat and Maurizio Galli. «The boats must be tied up in an appropriate way – they say – certain canals in the center have completely dried up and the gondolas were resting on the mud. However, when traveling with the new tide, the ropes can easily hook onto the heads or knots of the poles, causing the boat to hang. Continuous surveillance is needed especially in the lower canals and certainly some colleague will sleep little during the night, to go and see the state of their gondola and in case run for cover by melting the peaks ».
