INTERVIEW Danko talks about another Cold War: The misfortune of Slovakia is not a coronavirus, but Sulík, Matovič and Kollár!
In the interview you will learn:
- How does the former Speaker of Parliament assess the current political situation?
- Doesn’t the government feel sorry for Smer and Most?
- Are ĽSNS and Republika potential partners for him?
- Are you vaccinated yet?
- How do you react to the government’s words about compulsory vaccination?
Mr Danko, you are not in parliament at the current parliamentary term, so what do you do on a regular day?
– Even after the election, I said that I had to decide whether to continue politics at all. I am grateful to the people who stood by me last year. It was a really hectic period, we basically went from the beginning, in some surveys we had zero percent. I was thinking about what was going on. I did not understand that Richard Sulík, Igor Matovič and Boris Kollár were going to form a government, and that Matovič was even elected by 25 percent of the election. It was definitely worse than what I’m going through now. I feel better because I feel the support of the people again, I see that I am coming back to us. I had to literally get rid of some people who were doing well around me and then left me and advised me. So, I’m going as a test of life.

Don’t you regret the feedback that you went to the government with Smer and Most?
– I admit I’ve thought about it a lot. It should be noted that from 2022 to 2016, Robert Fico ruled alone, I did not know him at all. Subsequently, in 2016, Slovakia faced several challenges – we were the presiding states in the Council of the European Union, world delegations came here, and on the other hand, Sulík, Matovič and Kollár called me. At that time, I said at a press conference that if they ruled, it would be the destruction of the state, because not even a fortune teller knew what they would come up with tomorrow.
The government with Fico and Béla Bugár was difficult, but I nevertheless believe that if the Slovaks now see Sulík, Kollár and Matovič rule, they must understand my decision. I also did not dream of a government, and I often told my coalition partners that I wanted to put them off politically and now I have to rule with them. There are things that I will not change and I also learned from this period.
I ask because the CIS has been below the election threshold for a long time, at around 3.6 percent. What do you say to these numbers? Isn’t that a certificate for you after the government with Smer?
– This situation has been here before. After I became the chairman of the CIS, we practically had low electoral preferences until 2015, below four percent, then in 2016 we got into parliament and the government. This is good for cleansing relationships, I have stopped having a lot of people. We see the situation after the election. People can now see the government, where, for example, Deputy Prime Minister Veronika Remišová does not even know the amount of VAT and the like. If the numbers continue like this, I believe that ours will also grow.
What values would you like to reach?
– I’ve been in politics long enough to run for preferences with someone. Already after the last elections, I said that it was important to know those with whom change could be enforced. It does not have to be a competition, what percentage we would like to have, because every politician I would like to have as much as possible. I believe I will not lie again. When I see Kollár, to whom I handed over the office of the National Council and the functioning National Council, what he did to the parliament and how he can deceive the people, I feel sick. Many believe Kollár does this for people, but I wonder why they don’t finally think. Real facts will not let go. What they have run in society is dangerous for society, but also for themselves.
Who are your potential partners? Could you imagine a government with extremists such as LSNS and Republika?
– Don’t drag me into this group of people, I’ve always eliminated them. ĽSNS and its members are unacceptable in Moscow, although they like to turn there. After all, when I was in front of the parliament, I experienced international embarrassment several times for the LSNS, when the parliamentary delegations rejected the negotiations at the level of Kotleb and its members. If Milan Uhrík, who is currently sitting in parliament, claims that he did not greet Kotleba by greeting the guard, then I say that he is lying. it is very common that neither liberal nor ultranational parties can form a government and represent Slovakia in Brussels or in other countries.

How do you evaluate the current measures? People complained that they were very chaotic many times. The first was a lockdown for the unvaccinated, then for all, now the release of measures for the vaccinated and overcome…
– What is happening here now should be a great lesson for every Slovak. The keys to the mixer, the state administration, were given by people for various reasons, who used the policy only for life reasons. These measures are assessed as the result of chaos. The chaos is the result of the unpreparedness of people like Sulík, Kollár and Matovič. We hear about this trio, cursing each other, not interested people. Kollár can also be seen making a good day out of people. Take hospital reform – Kollár went to the hospitals, then stood with Peter Visolajský and Banská Bystrica County John Lunter in parliament and said how he opposes this reform and is finally voting, what is it? When Peter Pellegrini, as Prime Minister with the then Minister of Health Andrea Kalavska, came and stratified the hospitals, I told Fico and Bugár straight away that if this passed, the CIS would leave the government.
Is your attitude towards vaccination unchanged? Or have you been vaccinated or are you still planning to do so?
– In 2016, I suffered from cancer and they had a several-centimeter tumor in my stomach. For this reason, I must consult my doctor about my health and, if necessary, vaccinations. This topic is not closed yet. But I have relatives in the family who are vaccinated, even my parents are vaccinated. However, I have never shown anyone to be vaccinated or vaccinated, it is his free choice. Coronavirus is only the third in the statistics of deaths in Slovakia. The first is cancer and the second is cardiovascular disease. And 80 percent of those who died last year were people over the age of 64. These are vulnerable groups of people whom I understand have been vaccinated. But I am not in favor of vaccinating young children or forcing young people and women to be vaccinated. I’m no antivaxer, just an analytical and sensible person. I don’t want to hurt anyone. And people who have the same problem cannot be discriminated against just because they are not vaccinated. I refuse to be subject to the pressure and threats.
How do you react to the words of the members of the governing coalition about compulsory vaccination? Do you agree with this proposal?
– No obligation as an order will be effective if the person who proposed it does not have arguments in hand. I want us to live a normal life, but I don’t want to live in a society where vaccinations will have to be vaccinated every six months, because it’s sick. If I have all the necessary information, I have no problem telling people – come for the vaccination, because there are no other solutions.
