nth tragedy at work in Turin, where a crane collapsed in the street and on a seven-storey building in via Genova. In the crash, which occurred around 10, one of the workers who had started to frequent the base on Friday died instantly. A second worker died after the intervention of the 118 rescuers, while a colleague was transported to the CTO in red code and died in hospital from very serious head trauma. A fourth, injured in yellow code. Even two passers-by, including a motorist in a passing car, have been injured but are not in serious condition.
Lo Russo: A serious wound for the city
On the spot also the mayor of Turin Stefano Lo Russo:
A great pain and bewilderment for this new dramatic accident at work. A serious wound for the city, deeply shaken. I express my condolences to the families. Workplaces – he stresses – should be places to return from and where to be safe. The death of these three workers seriously wounded the city. The dynamics will be clarified by the competent authorities. The municipal administration – continues Lo Russo – mobilized with emergency response, civil protection and the municipal police for the necessary operations. As mayor and on behalf of the entire administration we are constantly monitoring the situation and on Monday we will report to the Council on the incident.
It could have been a massacre
From a first reconstruction the three workers involved in the accident at work they were on the platform to go the boom of the crane then collapsed. Firefighters have speculated a structural failure at the base of the crane, but not excluded that the asphalt could be collapsed under the weight of the tower after mounting the arm. The construction site where we were working had been opened for the refurbishment of the roof of a seven-story building. We heard a loud roar, we looked out on the balcony and saw the crane stretched along the road – says a resident of the area – it was terrible. And again: Yesterday below there was a queue at the post office and a few meters further on the bus stop. It could have been a massacre. This was said by a worker from the construction site in via Genova.
The yard
Based on the first reconstructions it seems that the assembly operations have reached the final stages. The last link was missing to fix and then the yellow crane would finish its job. The three deceased fitters, employees of a subcontracted company, were at the top, on the arm, while the yellow tower, which was due to the workers to intervene on the roof of the building in via Genova 107, just had to be unhooked. The construction site had been opened yesterday and the crane seemed perfectly aligned, but something went wrong. Around 10, Alberto, owner of the bar on the corner with Via Millefonti, raised his eyes and saw a chilling scene: It seemed like there was a storm, but there wasn’t a breath of wind. I saw the crane sway and then fall. There were two men on top trying desperately to hold on, but they didn’t. it was awful.
the crash
The tower and boom crashed to the ground and the three workers got stuck under the concrete blocks. Two died almost instantly, while the third died in the CTO hospital. A car was also hit in the impact but the driver got away with minor bruises and got out of the cockpit alone. Two others, including a woman, hit in the head by rubble, are injured, but their conditions are not serious. The operations of the firefighters are in progress to make the structure safe: working to extract the two bodies under the concrete blocks – we are said the commander Carrolo – still early to draw conclusions, but the first hypothesis is a failure structural at the base of the tower.
In Piedmont 40 deaths since the beginning of the year
This morning’s crane accident in via Genova in Turin brings the number of deaths at work in Piedmont up to 40 in the course of 2021. An endless massacre, in front of which – apart from the dutiful condolences towards the families of the victims – the words now they seem inadequate. Thus, in a note, CGIL and Fillea CGIL Torino. Concrete facts are needed starting from more checks and more training, especially in construction, especially in this phase of strong resumption of work, where haste often prevails over everything – the unions add -. Safety is a right and not a cost. We ask everyone to do their part, starting with a quick ascertainment of responsibility for this umpteenth tragedy.
