A speedboat, with 119 drums of fuel, was found today on the south bank of the Lima River, in the parish of Deão, in Viana do Castelo, presumably associated with drug trafficking, the captain of the local port told news agency Lusa.
“Everything indicates that the vessel came overland and was being placed in the water. The vessel is collected for drug trafficking activities, most likely used to transport drugs,” said frigate captain Silva Lampreia.
It is a high-speed boat, 14 meters long, equipped with three 200-horsepower engines.
The vessel was found by the Maritime Police (PM), around 8:00 am, during an inspection action on the Lima River, and the Investigative Police of the General Command of the PM and a forensic group were called to obtain evidence.
“It is the first time that a vessel of its kind is found on the Lima River, and it is a constant concern of the Military Police that has now materialized in this situation”, said the captain of the port of the capital of Alto Minho.
According to Silva Lampreia, the high-speed boat was found abandoned “near a slope located on the riverbank, with the husk placed in the river and with the 119 drums with 2,300 liters of fuel spread all over the side”.
“Everything indicates that the vessel was being placed in the water when something went wrong. It must have fallen and there must be a hole in the bottom. Protection measures are implemented to prevent the fuel that is being released from polluting the river’s waters”, he explained.
The vessel was seized and will be removed by land.
