25 percent increase in registered corona infection last week – NRK Norway – Overview of news from different parts of the country

In the last 24 hours, 6,003 corona-infected people have been registered in Norway, the highest ever during the pandemic. At the same time, 375 corona-infected patients are hospitalized in Norway.
This is the highest number of hospitalizations since the pandemic started.
I sin sister weekly report, which applies to the period 6 to 12 December, FHI writes that last week reported almost 33,000 new cases of coronary heart disease in Norway. This corresponds to an increase of 25 percent.
Since 2 November, the R-number has been 1.2, FHI estimates.
The report also states that there are similar transfers to intensive care units at the highest level since the spring of 2020.
“Although the risk of a serious course is low, especially for vaccinated people, the large spread of infection in society will lead to an increasing number of serious cases of disease,” writes FHI.
More unvaccinated people are admitted
Almost 3.9 million people or 88 percent of the population over the age of 18 have taken the minimum to dose with the coronary vaccine. In addition, around 4 percent have taken one vaccine dose. 8 percent of the population is still unvaccinated, figures from FHI.
According to FHI’s definitions, one is considered partially vaccinated three weeks after the first dose, and fully vaccinated one week after dose two.
So far, 222 new patients have been reported to be hospitalized with covid-19 as the main cause in week 49.
According to the weekly report, the unvaccinated make up an increasing proportion of those admitted to hospitals with covid-19. Last week, more than half of those who ended up in hospital were not vaccinated.
The fact that so many unvaccinated people now end up in hospital gives cause for concern, says department director Line Vold in FHI.
– We are concerned about the development, and take the situation seriously. The reason is that we see that the risk of admissions is significantly higher for unvaccinated people than for those who have received the vaccine.
In week 48, 89 unvaccinated patients aged 18 years and older were admitted with covid. In Week 49, the number increased to 102.
The figures for fully vaccinated are 103 (week 48) and 90 (week 49).
The decrease in hospitalized fully vaccinated is particularly noticeable in the age group over 65 years, probably due to refresher doses, according to NIPH.
The proportion with omikron is increasing
The proportion of cases with the omicron variant among the screened cases increased from 2.1 per cent in week 48 to 5.8 per cent so far for week 49. Most cases have been detected in Oslo and Viken.
– We are worried about omikron because it has great dispersal potential. We expect that it will take over as the dominant variant in Norway soon, says Vold.
The omicron variant probably has a greater dispersibility than the delta variant. Thus, the epidemic will be more difficult to control, and the burden on the health service will increase, FHI believes.
On Monday, FHI presented a risk assessment of the spread of the omikron variant. The worst-case scenario showed that around New Year we can get between 90,000 to 300,000 daily cases. Violence says they are now continuing to work with models.
– We continue to work with modeling where we take into account the effect of measures, booster doses and other factors. What we wanted to show with the preliminary scenario was the great dispersal potential in this variant, she says.
FHI points out that it is still the Delta variant that dominates at the moment, with 94.2 per cent of the screened cases. The report states that 46 per cent of all cases of infection in Norway have been screened for virus variants.
– There are still different subgroups of delta viruses that drive the infection and the growing epidemic in Norway now, writes FHI.
Seeing signs of flu spread
Although the incidence of influenza is very small in Norway, last week there was a clear increase in proven cases. This is happening now that the flu is spreading in Norway.
– The same trend is seen in several other European countries, including Sweden, the report states.
They further write that it is still RS and rhinovirus that dominate when it comes to other respiratory infections in the population than coronavirus.
