The Judiciary Police will provide additional clarification at 9:30 am.
João Rendeiro announced, on September 28, that he was out of Portugal and that he did not intend to return, after having been sentenced to three years and six months in prison in a process for crimes of qualified fraud.
The Portuguese authorities have already issued two arrest warrants, European and international, for the former president of the BPP, so that the former banker would comply with the coercion measure of preventive detention.
In an article published on his blog Arma Crítica, João Rendeiro wrote that he did not intend to return to Portugal because he felt wronged and that he would resort to taking advantage of it, advancing having asked the lawyer to communicate the decision to the Portuguese justice and saying that he had become “the scapegoat of a willingness to punish those who, after all, were not punished”.

Meanwhile, former BPP administrators Salvador Fezas Vital and Fernando Lima, also sentenced to prison terms, admitted to being prohibited from going abroad, having contributed to this aggravation of measures to coerce João Rendeiro’s flight.
The collapse of BPP, a bank dedicated to managing wealth, happened in 2010, after the BPN case and preceding other scandals in Portuguese banking.
The BPP gave rise to several legal proceedings, involving crimes of qualified fraud, document falsification and computer forgery, as well as another one related to fines imposed by bank supervisory authorities.
