“The executive committee took note of Štefan Tarkovič and evaluated it as one of the best in recent years. Together with the vice-president for state representation and international relations Karol Belaník, we were given a mandate to propose the name of the coach to the executive committee by 31 December, “said Ján Kováčik, president of the Slovak Football Association (SFZ), on a video link on the federal website on Tuesday afternoon.
We did not receive any further reaction from the representatives of the Executive Committee (SC), and until the situation regarding the future on the bench of the Slovak national team became clear, Štefan Tarkovič himself would not like to comment either.
The highest Dúbravka, the lowest Scarf
However, the still acting head coach of Slovakia willingly allows us to follow into his analysis, which he presented to the members of VV SFZ and which the union boss praised. We have decided to choose from the most interesting facts and data that could help give you an overall picture of how our representatives have performed during the past calendar year in the matches for next year’s Qatar World Championship.
Of course, it is important that numbers are not everything and the performance of a football player also consists of other important attributes, which, however, do not always correspond and exactly meet numerically. Nevertheless, the following lines offer remarkable statistical parameters of the recently completed qualification for advancement to MS 2022, perhaps not only for connoisseurs.
From an individual point of view, the statistics are evaluated separately for each specific game position, taking into account all players from the 55 Football Union Associations (UEFA) who have played at least ten percent of the total time in the past qualifier.
The highest goalkeeper Martin Dúbravka got from the Slovak team, who “finished” 25th among his “. It is interesting that the best goalkeeper in the Instat Index rankings was the Croatian Ivica Ivušič, whom we remember, among other things, because he collected a clean account in Tehelné pole in September and helped the reigning vice-champions of the world to three points from Bratislava.

Dávid Hancko, who we found in 29th place, got the most among the left defenders. On the right, Martin Koscelník (41st place) was better than Peter Pekarík (46th). Surprisingly, even shockingly, the ratings of the trackers sound. Among all 200 middle defenders who were at least 10 percent of the time mentioned in the game, Milan Škriniar took 83rd position and Ľubomír Šatka was even seventy-seven!
Of the defensive midfielders, Stanislav Lobotka (62nd) is the best, and of the offensive midfielders Juraj Kuck (45th). We are not much better at other offensive positions either. Of the wingers, Róbert Mak has the highest InStat Index, ranking 37th. Even deeper in the European comparison, we have fallen to the position of the striker. The best of our quartet was the seventy-ninth David Strelec, the worst Róbert Boženík finished in 122nd place.
The comparison with our rivals in the H-group of qualification is also interesting. While Slovakia has only Martin Dubravka in all positions in the Top 25, the Croats have up to ten players! In addition to the aforementioned Ivušič, there are Barišič, Sosa, Juranovič, Stanišič, Vrsaljko, Gvardiol, Modrič, Perišič and Majer. From the Russian team, the Guilherme, Safonov, Fernandes, Sutormin and Dziuba quintet got into the top twenty-five. Slovenians also have only one-member representation, thanks to Iličič.
Many also reveal team statistics. From the point of view of creating goal opportunities, we reworked to 15th place. On average, we got into seven chances in one match, while we were able to score 1.7 goals (per match), which represents a 23 percent production. For comparison, the Russians, with whom we were supposed to fight for second place in the group, were supposed to reach ten percent more. On average, they only got to six options in one duel, but they scored up to 1.9 goals.
The Slovaks reached the 17th position in the final games, ie after all the finishes ended. They produced an average of nine such passes per game, with five of them eventually ending the goal. The Germans were the best in this respect (21/11), the highest Croats in our group finished in eleventh position (11/6).
Well, as far as the team’s Instat Index is concerned (on average per duel), the Slovaks finished in 27th place there. The Dutch dominated the Germans and the English. The Croats occupied the 11th place and the Russians were in the 24th position.
WHAT IS INSTAT INDEX?
This is a unique parameter that significantly indicates the performance level of the player. Each player position is monitored by a number of factors (from 12 to 14), which are then grouped into a single number according to a predetermined key. Each player function has a different “weight” of individual parameters, for example, an unused goal opportunity is assessed differently for attackers and differently for middle defenders.
