un livre pour découvrir les révoltes populaires qui ont bouleversé l’Aquitaine
Written by about twenty people, “Popular revolts in Aquitaine from the end of the Middle Ages to the present day” recount 18 examples of protest phenomena taking place in Aquitaine
“We could not claim to be exhaustive because the revolts are very numerous. We mainly chose according to the historical diversity and the unfolding ”, explains Pierre Robin of Editions d’Albret. Each chapter presents a revolt and was written by a different person. The 26 contributors make the writing styles heterogeneous. However, reading remains affordable, because all the chapters begin with a narrative of the facts, then with an expert’s analysis.
Collective consciousness and class struggle
During a discussion during the annual meetings organized by the Espaces Marx Aquitaine association and the Utopia cinema in Bordeaux, the discussions around the yellow vests have on popular revolts in general. Alexandre Fernandez, professor of history at Bordeaux-Montaigne University, Pierre Robin and Jean-Pierre Lefèvre from the PourquoiPas cultural association, have decided to organize a conference on these revolts on June 11 and 12 at the Musée d ‘ aquitaine. The approach was also supported by the Aquitaine Institute of Social History and Espaces Marx 33.
Thanks to researchers Cédric Chambru and Paul Maneuvrier Hervieu, who created a database (HiSCoD) which lists more than 10,000 protest phenomena, a particular light on the history of Aquitaine was able to be shed, bearing on significant episodes. and little known, such as the strikes of the dockers in Bayonne in 1911.
The chapters follow the chronological order to highlight the evolution of protest phenomena, from the peasant revolt of the Pitauds to the XVIe century until the movement of yellow vests. “The moment when individual anger crystallizes into collective anger is very interesting. We tried to highlight this collective consciousness and the class struggle, ”explains Pierre Robin.
