There are 49 cases of the omicron variant in Portugal
Pressure on Portuguese health services and impact on covid-19 mortality maintain a high and “growing” trend. In all, there are 49 cases of the new variant in the country.
According to the report of the “Red Lines” released by the Directorate-General for Health (DGS) and by the Doctor Ricardo Jorge Health Institute (INSA) this Friday, the virus epidemic activity has a “high intensity, with a strong tendency growing at the national level”.
Maintaining this growth rate, at the national level, it is estimated that the threshold of 480 cases in 14 days per 100,000 inhabitants will be exceeded over the next seven days. The age group with the highest 14 days corresponds to the group of children under 10 years of age (690 cases per 100,000 inhabitants).
For now, 49 cases associated with the new variant have been identified, and the number “includes cases with viral genome sequencing, as well as cases in which specific mutations that are strong predictors” of the omicron have been identified.
“The pressure on health services and the impact on mortality are high and with an increasing trend, revealing regional asymmetries”, revealing the data contained in the document, which relate the emergence of a “new variant of concern” with “the need for reinforce epidemiological, virological and border control surveillance in Portugal, until more information is communicated”.
