Portugal registers 49 cases associated with the Ómicron variant
Portugal registers 49 cases associated with the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, all asymptomatic or with mild symptoms of covid-19, indicated as “red lines” of the pandemic published today.
“Identified a total of 49 cases associated with the Omicron variant. This figure includes cases with viral genome sequencing, as well as cases in which specific mutations were identified that strongly predict the Omicron variant”, needs the pandemic risk analysis, advancing that there are 15 more cases compared to last week.
According to the weekly report of the General Directorate of Health (DGS) and the National Institute of Health Doctor Ricardo Jorge (INSA), of these 49 cases, 39 cases (80%) were male and the average age was 35 years, having varied between three and 73 years.
DGS and INSA also indicate that, so far, these cases have been asymptomatic or mildly associated, with no hospitalizations or deaths having occurred.
According to the “red lines”, the epidemiological situation of the Omicron variant is still under evolution and investigation.
Omicron was first identified in southern African countries and was classified as a variant of concern by the World Health Organization on 26 November 2021.
Its circulation is subject to close monitoring at a global level, having already been detected in several countries on a global scale.
The document also states that the Delta variant (B.1.617.2) remains the most dominant in all regions, with a relative frequency of approximately 100% of cases reported in the week of November 22nd to 28th in Portugal.
In Portugal, since March 2020, 18,626 people have died and 1,185,036 cases of infection have been recorded, according to data from the General Directorate of Health.
