FC Augsburg won a short victory to stay in the Bundesliga. The Augsburgers inflicted their first home defeat of the season on 1. FC Köln.
Despite great personnel worries, the won FC Augsburg at 1. FC Köln not undeservedly 2-0 (0-0) – although numerous regular players were missing. With 16 points, coach Markus Weinzierl’s team jumped to 14th place in the Bundesliga for the time being.
Andre Hahn (72nd) and Niklas Dorsch (88th) scored the goals for the first away win for FCA in a muddled game on a weak level. Sebastian Andersson (2nd) missed the best opportunity right from the start for Cologne, which fell significantly after a good initial phase. In the table, Cologne remains in ninth place for the time being, but missed the chance to make contact with the European Cup places.
“We worked it out”
“That was an extremely important game for us,” said Hahn at DAZN: “I think we played a really good game. In the end it was a happy ending for us, but we worked it out.”
The mood in Cologne is different. “We actually played a good game, but in the end it was again because we didn’t score at the front,” said Salih Özcan. FC goalkeeper Marvin Schwänke said: “We played relatively well up front, but didn’t take our chances and conceded two stupid goals. Nevertheless, it really wasn’t a bad game.”
Andersson misses the first chance
The Swede Andersson almost gave FC a dream start, but his header from a few flew just wide. Augsburg did not hide either. Hahn (3rd) shot powerfully from the edge of the penalty area at the Cologne goal, substitute goalkeeper Marvin Schwänke, who represented the injured Timo Horn, parried the ball worth seeing.
Augsburg coach Weinzierl had to do without his strikers Alfred Finnbogason and Florian Niederlechner, among others. U21 European champion Arne Maier is also missing, central defender Felix Uduokhai, who has just recovered from an injury, is also out after a positive corona test.
Mistakes in Cologne build Augsburg up
Nevertheless, the FCA delivered the fight promised by Weinzierl to Cologne. The guests benefited from numerous mistakes made by FC. Ruben Vargas would practically have benefited from a bad pass from Rafael Czichos. The Swiss intercepted the pass of the Cologne defense chief, but then shot just past (24th), a little later Vargas missed again (29th).
Cologne continued to have more possession and tried to control. But because there was a lack of speed, ideas and accuracy, the FC hardly came to a dangerous conclusion. After the break, Cologne started stormy – and would still have reasonably fallen behind. Swabian war against Hahn’s long-range shot again on the spot (53rd).
