There were two Gervais on the ASPTT Caen match sheet against Flers and Deauville. Paul, 19, has been a regular since he was propelled to the left-back position more than two years ago. Julien, a 23-year-old older brother, is a novice. His two recent tenures in Regional 1 constituting his very first appearances at this level of competition. When the defensive midfielder arrived from Troarn (R3) in 2018, it was to join the PTT reserve team. “I needed a new challenge and it brought me closer to my brother,” he testifies.
“A pride in playing together”
Playing together, Paul and Julien Gervais dreamed of it. Laurent Dufour, encouraged by the performance of the elder in R2 and the injuries suffered in his own workforce, did so. “When the doors open, you have to take advantage of it and show what you can do,” says Julien Gervais. The young man struggled to apply it, to the delight of his younger brother.
I was only waiting for one chosen: my brother to join me in the first team. Now that he’s with us, it’s a pleasure to play with him.
Very close to each other in a “sporty and united” family, the brothers make their characteristic style shine on the synthetic of the ax. “We like the duel,” smiles Paul. When we’re both together, it’s a bit scary … The teammates know that we are not going to take the lead and that we are not going to let go. They say to themselves: “damn, there are the two Gervais opposite, the galley!” “. “
Guided by their father
If the first is “perhaps a little more technical” and the second “much faster”, according to the elder, Julien and Paul Gervais share the same scam. They developed it in Troarn. “We were brought up a bit like that in football,” explains Julien. We always started out by wanting to win before looking good or trying to play well. “The genes may be there too, for these footballer sons.
Our father, who was our educator in Troarn, had a different profile because he was a striker, but he had the same desire.
Paul, in R1 at 17
The cousins of Teddy Gervais, who also wore the colors of ASPTT Caen, and former handball player Mégane Gervais “grew up around the football fields with a ball in their feet”. Paul quickly distinguished himself by playing with the U17 Nationals of the Yellow and Black. “I was going to see him play and it was already impressive,” says Julien. The following year, it was the unexpected jump in the first team. “I didn’t expect to play in R1 at 17 at all,” says Paul. The hardest part was to confirm. “
The leaping full-back, who is in his tenth year at the club, has done it brilliantly. Happiness is complete alongside a beloved big brother. “It allows us to spend even more time together. Future choices won’t be dictated by fraternal ties, but the icing is almost as good as the cake when the Gervais brothers tread the same ground.
