The districts of Lisbon and Setúbal are the only ones in the country where the salary is above the national average, according to the ‘Correio da Manhã’ (CM), which had access to the remuneration declared to Social Security.
According to the publication, the average salary in Portugal of employees reached, at the end of September this year, 1169 euros (without discounts). This represents a drop of almost 40 euros compared to May 2021, when this figure was 1208 euros.
The coast of Portugal is an area where average gross salaries reach the highest values, with the districts of Lisbon (1390 euros) and Setúbal (1233 euros) recording the highest values and the only ones above the average.
Next, also with higher salaries, are the cities of Porto with an average salary of 1161 euros, and Coimbra, where the inhabitants earn an average of 1126 euros, according to the ‘CM’.
In the opposite direction are the regions of the Interior – North, Center and Alentejo -, which appear as those where wages are lower, with Beja occupying the last place (964 euros of average salary), preceded by Vila Real (968 euros) , Bragança (970 euros) and Guarda (972 euros).
According to the newspaper, the average monthly salary in Portugal registered in September a reduction of around 40 euros, due to the creation of new jobs with lower prices.
The overall volume of declared remuneration also decreased, with almost 4.5 billion euros having been declared in salaries to Social Security in May, against around 4.4 billion in September.
