Sweden’s goalkeeper Robin Lehner chooses to skip the Olympics, with reference to mental health
Vegas Golden Knights goalkeeper Robin Lehner announced on Sunday night that he will not participate in the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing for Team Sweden, and said that the event would not be ideal for his mental health.
“Fantastic performance tonight from our team. Must deal with I will not go to the Olympics,” Lehner said after a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Flames. “I am very disappointed and that [was a] difficult decision for me because it is a once in a lifetime opportunity. The reality is that what has been said about how it will be is not ideal for my mental health. “
The 30-year-old added that the uncertainty about how Covid-19 could affect the games was part of his decision.
“It took a long time to make a decision with my psychiatrist and family. My well-being must come first and being locked up and not knowing what happens if you test positive is a big risk for me. Sweden will have a fantastic team and [Jacob] Ground current is a beast. Hope people understand. ”
Lehner, born in Gothenburg, Sweden, is 10-9 with 3.02 goals against the average and a save percentage of 0.910 over 19 games this season, his third in Vegas.
