Sweden nominated for first female Prime Minister | Border post

Sweden’s Social Democratic party leader Magdalena Andersson looks set to become her country’s first female prime minister after the government and the Left Party reached an agreement which means that the former communists back her in a confirmation vote in the Riksdag. The confirmation vote will be held on Wednesday. Andersson took over as leader of the Social Democrats after the outgoing Prime Minister Stefan Lofven earlier this month, but needs support from the ruling minority coalition with the Greens to become his successor. Left-wing leader Nooshi Dadogostar said she had agreed to support Andersson as prime minister and the government’s budget – which parliament will vote on later on Wednesday – after reaching an agreement on higher pensions and health insurance. – First we will vote for our own budget, but in the second round we will vote for the government’s budget because we believe that we have managed to bring in a lot of improvements in health insurance, Dadgostar says to Swedish television. The Center Party has already said that it will not block Andersson’s path to the prime ministerial post, and support from the left should tip the scales in favor of the current Minister of Finance. The longtime Prime Minister Lofven resigned earlier this month to give Andersson a chance to increase support for the party ahead of a parliamentary election in September next year.
