City partnership: Salzburg supports Singida
Like Salzburg, Singida is the name of a city and a region. The Sida region is located in the heart of Tanania, whose capital is home to as many people as Salzburg. The region is poor, some people die undernourished and there is no extensive running water.
The association Salzburg – Singida, city twinning and regional cooperation in the area around the city has been involved for around 30 years. This year the responsible association has reorganized itself, the project managers now want to support women and girls more intensively.
Association wants to promote village development and health
The partnership with Salzburg aims to promote village development, health and education in Singida. In a current project, sanitary towels are being distributed to girls. “Those in Singida do not go to school and are also excluded from daily activities at home, which is why we started the project to distribute sanitary towels.”
Tanzania: “Education creates freedom for women”
Education also creates freedom for women in Tanzania. Studies show that every additional year a girl goes to school actually makes a difference to her life. This can be determined from tangible indicators – girls get married later, have fewer children and we know that mothers with a better education also ensure that their daughters go to a decent school again, ”says board member Dieter Rachbauer.
City partnership: Salzburg supports Singida
Salzburg and the African city of Singida are 6,200 kilometers apart, but they are still closely connected, because for over 30 years it has been a city partnership and a regional cooperation.
Children’s home and schools have already been set up
In the past, for example, the association built a children’s home and several schools. Next, accommodation is planned especially for schoolchildren. The aim of the association is to ensure that education and health do not remain a privilege, but BECOMES a right for everyone. The association’s projects are financed, among other things, by private donations. The money does not go to the authorities, but directly to the local organization.
Salzburg transfers 120,000 euros per year
The taxpayer also participates in the project: the city and state of Salzburg pay around 120,000 euros per year. The head of the association is Martina Berthold, City Councilor from the green list of citizens. “The public sector is also responsible for development work, not only at the federal level but also at the state level. We have a development policy advisory council in Salzburg, which examines the projects carefully and checks whether they are also working well and sustainably, ”explains Berthold.
