Lisbon Metro strike since midnight, circulation resumed on Friday | transport
Workers at the Metropolitano de Lisboa have been on strike since midnight, against the wage freeze and to demand career advancements, in a protest that will last for 24 hours.
According to the company, because of this strike “for the majority of workers”, the Metropolitano de Lisboa should only reopen at 6:30 am on Friday.
“If train-based services are decreed”, the company will “evaluate the operational conditions” to reopen the service between midnight and 01:00 on Friday, informed the Metropolitano de Lisboa in a statement.
This is the second strike at the Metropolitano de Lisboa this week, after there was a partial stoppage on Tuesday between 5:00 and 9:30, with train circulation starting at around 10:00.
On 26 and 28 October, workers at the Metropolitano de Lisboa had already staged partial strikes similar to Tuesday, with stations remaining closed until after 10 am.
According to the company, these partial strikes, the global adhesion to the protest was between 42.62% and 46.26%, while the federation of unions that represent the workers (FECTRANS, Federation of Transport and Communications Unions) stated that membership was “high”, without giving numbers.
Workers have already staged partial strikes in May and June, taking into account the same characteristics needed for the new strike.
At the origin of the stoppages is the protest against the salary freeze and the fight for the application of all the commitments assumed by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Action, which includes an extension of the Company Agreement, for the immediate completion of the operational framework and for progressions in the career.
Last week, a carrier said in a statement that it is “receptive to the discussion of the proposals of the union entities, being as such an object of negotiation”.
The Lisbon Underground operates with four lines: Yellow (Rato-Odivelas), Green (Telheiras-Cais do Sodré), Blue (Reboleira-Santa Apolónia) and Red (Airport-São Sebastião), from 6:30 am to 1:00 am every day.
