The Salzburg Mountain Film Festival puts strong women in the foreground
Today the organizers have designed a film and lecture program that once again defines the term mountain film in a broad way – and is dedicated to facets of climbing, cycling and skiing as well as the depths of the Salzburg Untersberg or the differentiated view of foreign countries.
Strong women in the foreground
“The time of the male heroes fighting against the summit is finally over,” said film curator Martin Hasenöhrl at the program press conference on Wednesday. “The focus is on strong women, great emotions, an intense sense of community, but also irony, a certain lightness and, last but not least, great respect in dealing with the forces of nature”. Works by people from Salzburg who are dying to make a film for the first time in their life are shown, right through to films that are shown internationally. “We want to reflect this range in the program.”

Numerous premieres in Salzach
Today it was possible to bring numerous Austrian premieres to the Salzach. “Three Peaks & In Between” follows the German extreme cyclist Jana Kesenheimer in a bike race from Vienna to Nice. Each participant chooses the route themselves and rides without support, always with the equipment on the bike. There are only three fixed points on the way, you sleep on wooden benches or at bus stops. “La Liste II”, on the other hand, shows the two steep face skiers Jérémie Heitz and Sam Anthamatten trying to plunge down from peaks of over 6,000 meters. The protagonists of both films will also be guests in Salzburg.
Local Heroes in Salzburg
Not only the young films of the Local Heroes are for the first time more female cast. “Pretty Strong” follows eight of the strongest climbers today, while “Cholitas” shows five indigenous women from Bolivia and Peru without much mountaineering experience. The quintet wants – in traditional clothing and contrary to the traditional role model – to climb America’s highest mountain, the 6,961 meter high Aconcagua, together. The program this year includes twelve film programs with 24 short and feature-length films, some of which have won awards, from a dozen countries.
Readings, book presentations and films
In addition to a reading, two book presentations and the Film & Talk series, where directors or protagonists answer questions from the audience, there will be five lectures this year – including with Alexander Huber, the younger of the two “Huber boys”. “It will be about what constitutes modern alpinism and what has happened in the past three and a half decades,” announced today’s festival co-organizer Thomas Neuhold.
Inside of the Untersberg
Further lectures lead to Greenland and Albania, the cave explorer Georg Zagler tells what happens inside the Untersberg. Barbara Zangerl and her partner Jacopo Larcher report on their last expedition to the legendary Trango Towers in Pakistan.
