Participation of San Marino in COP26, also yesterday a day full of bilateral meetings
The fruitful mission of the San Marino delegation led by the Exc. Captains Regent and the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Luca Beccari to the COP26 in Glasgow ends today. Yesterday, the Regency took the floor at the World Leader Summit, delivering its speech in front of the distinguished attendees at the conference. On the sidelines of this speech, various bilateral meetings took place between the delegation and the Heads of State and Government of various countries. Following the meeting that took place on Monday with the British Minister for Europe and the Americas, Wendy Morton, the delegation again deepened the dialogue by focusing on the initiatives that San Marino is implementing in favor of the environment at the internal level. The parties underlined the excellent relations between the two countries, also following the numerous official visits in recent months, in particular by Theresa May and Jeremy Hunt and by parliamentarians from the United Kingdom. Theresa May herself was present at the World Leader Summit and met the delegation again in an interview.
Subsequently, the delegation held talks with several government representatives of Kuwait, including Prince and Prime Minister Sabah Al-Khalid, Minister for Foreign Affairs Ahmad Al-Sabah and Minister for Oil and Electricity Bakheet Al -Rashidi. The parties recognized the importance of collaboration between small states, not only in the field of environmental sustainability but also by envisaging general technical cooperation in the economic and commercial fields. Also an official visit to the respective States, to deepen the discussions addressed during the World Leader Summit and for an exchange of best practices. Particularly touching for the San Marino authorities was the meeting with the Minister for Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid and the Minister for the Environment of the Maldives despite the efforts and virtuous internal policies implemented in recent years. Strategic collaborations are also envisaged in terms of environmental education and sustainable tourism.
The meeting with Montenegro, with which an official visit by Prime Minister Milo Milo Djukanovic scheduled for March to the Republic of San Marino, has been particularly important. On the other hand, the excellent relations with Croatia have been confirmed, with which the common historical-cultural traits have been retraced, consolidated in the last official visits that took place in 2021 and the excellent collaboration on European issues. At the end of the day, the delegation met the Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, with whom the excellent relations between the two countries and the desire for further future collaborations were confirmed. Equally fruitful was the dialogue with the Minister for the Environment of Togo with which it was discussed how Africa, despite emitting less than 3% of global emissions, suffers from greater and serious consequences in terms of environmental disasters, compared to other continents.
Profitable and courteous talks also took place with the representatives of Sao Tome and Principe, the Holy See, Sri Lanka, Monaco, Samoa and Andorra. The talks between the San Marino delegation and Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro and Albania were important in view of a hoped-for collaboration within the EUSAIR area. Today the Secretary of State for the Territory and the Environment, Stefano Canti, arrived in Glasgow, will continue the work, also participating in events on the sidelines of the COP26 organized by the UNECE, in view of the organization in San Marino of the Meeting of the Commission on development UN urban planning, scheduled for next year.
