Starlink? Eutelsat “attacks” in Portugal with Internet at 100 Mbps
Today, when you hear about satellite Internet, it’s normal to think about Starlink’s service. However, in the world, there are other companies betting on this type of service.
Spanish satellite operator Hispasat has entered into an agreement with Eutelsat to provide satellite connectivity services to Spain and Portugal via Eutelsat’s Konnect satellite.
Eutelsat promises to provide Internet access access of up to 100 Mbps
Bloomberg reported that French satellite operator Eutelsat Communications is increasing its broadband coverage to Spain and Portugal through partnership with Hispasat, a Spanish satellite operator.
According to the ISOC, Eutelsat, which has similar agreements with operators in France, Italy, Germany and South Africa, is one of several companies that are building Low Terrestrial Orbit Satellite networks, like Amazon's Kuiper and Starlink.
Eutelsat broadband service promises to provide Internet access delivery of up to 100 megabits per second for customers who are beyond the reach of traditional landline and mobile networks.
This agreement is part of the lines of action that Hispasat proposed in its Strategic Plan 2020-25, aimed at transforming an infrastructure operator into a satellite services and solutions company.
The company will move forward with its current business, but adapt to market trends, diversifying its portfolio through new technologies, services and strategic partnerships.
In Portugal, Internet access via satellite is available, especially designed for Internet access in remote areas, with low population density and/or with more complex terrain. Despite the reduced penetration of this service in Portugal, the number of subscribers increased 78.5% between the 4th quarter of 2018 and the 3rd quarter of 2020.
Internet via satellite reached 1,200 accesses at the end of 2020, which represents less than 0.3% of total local fixed accesses, but represents a growth of 32.4% compared to 2019.
