Genoa, corrosion of a helicoidal pylon: bans for heavy vehicles will be lifted in the evening. The Municipality: “No risk of collapse”
Genoa – It will be reopened in the evening the transit of heavy vehicles on the helicoidal of Genoa, the decision was taken by the Municipality of Genoa which issued a special order.
The commissioner Pietro Piciocchi and the technicians of the municipality and of Autostrade per l’Italia met and agreed that there is no immediate danger but they have in any case ordered a narrowing of the carriageway that leads from the port passage to the west Genoa toll booth: of the three lanes present, for a stretch of about 200 meters, only two will be available. On the other hand, they are not provided for traffic that goes from the motorway to the port.
The deterioration of the Elicoidale pylon, the circular junction that allows access both on the Sopraelevata and in via Cantore, via Albertazzi, Canepa promenade and on the ramp to the Genova Ovest motorway exit, had been reported during the night. The point under observation is the ramp at via Cantore.
The helical pylon that will need to be inspected
Technicians and workers have started the checks on the pylon. The checks, which are carried out by Rina technicians, should take a decision of a daythat is, they are aimed at understanding whether the deterioration is only superficial or even structural.

The changes to the viability in effect from the evening of Monday 1 November
The operations to prepare and modify the viability by the Municipality of Genoa and the Local Police on the Helicoid, whose reopening is scheduled for the evening, continued until the late afternoon.
Pending the results of new inspections and technical investigations, to lighten the load at the critical point of the Elicoidal, the Municipality of Genoa has made the following changes to the road network:
Direction of the Genova Ovest tollbooth: the traffic coming from the helicoidal and from the north elevated carriageway will flow on only two lanes, one coming from the elevated place and one coming from the helical one, in the current three, leaving the central lane free, adjacent to the central reservation;
City center direction (Overpass) and Helicoidal connection to the port: for traffic coming from the Genova Ovest tollbooth south carriageway, the existing two lanes will be maintained with narrowing and with anticipated directing of the traffic directed towards the port, with the use of the Helicoidal while maintaining a band of prohibition to traffic of about 1 and a half meters in the vicinity of the traffic island, and towards the city center, with use of the flyover.
The Municipality of Genoa: “No danger of collapse”
The stretch of the Helicoidale closed this morning to the lorries due to a deterioration ascertained on a pylon “is the responsibility of the Municipality of Genoa. Autostrade is working on that point for the strengthening of the San Benigno node and during the near via Cantore it shows a state of superficial corrosion in the central part and therefore needs to be investigated better. The checks will take place in the next few days with Rina “. It is learned from sources of the Municipality of Genoa. “It was an intervention already planned, there is no risk of collapse. It is only a precautionary measure”.
The chronicle of the morning
Pending the inspections this morning, the narrowing of the carriageway leaving Genoa Ovest and a weight limit for the one entering: the circulation of vehicles over 3.5 tons was forbidden, from morning until early afternoon, on the slip road ramp which leads to the elevated road and the Genova Ovest exit. The exit of heavy vehicles from the Ethiopia gate will be diverted to via Milano and then via Dino from which the heavy vehicles reach the old age toll booth of Genoa Airport. A local police patrol intervened on the Helicoidale in order to stop heavy vehicles and direct them to the Genoa Airport tollbooth.
Whose is the competence on the Helicoidal
The work in question is not the responsibility of Aspi. The report came from a Pavimental subcontractor which is working close to that work with Lot 2 of the upgrading of the San Benigno node.
The internal technical skills of the group were activated with Tecne and the external ones involved in various capacities in the technical checks of the works. From the first documentation of these checks, the technical structures of the municipality shared the need to put traffic conditions and Pavimental, which as mentioned has a construction site in the immediate vicinity, installed the signs.
Aspi has made itself available to carry out the further necessary investigations in the next days. Autostrade per l’Italia specifies that it has acted outside its competence, but on a work that is in any case of interest to it “because it is immediately interconnected with our network”.
