Departure controls: Salzburg is funded by the federal government
politics
Salzburg’s Transport Provincial Councilor Stefan Schnöll (ÖVP) demands that the federal government must pay for departure controls against traffic jams on the Tauern motorway. This is operated by the state highway company Asfinag. Total costs of the current year: 100,000 euros. The Green Minister of Transport in Vienna thinks little of it.
Too many vehicles in a short period of time, the Tauern motorway was stressed beyond its load limits last summer, emphasizes the Salzburg Provincial Councilor Schnöll. The result was massive evasive traffic, which caused a lot of noise, anger and protests in the communities along the motorway.
Relocate traffic jams to Bavaria?
In order to stop the summer traffic avalanche from today’s Germany earlier, the plan is to meter the flow of traffic to the neighbors in Bavaria in the future. The Salzburg Regional Transport Councilor Stefan Schnöll emphasizes that the most modern technology should be used: “In the future, we should block at the national borders and not in our communities.”
Schnöll is now demanding that the federal government contribute to the cost of the departure controls. The enormous volume of traffic has also given the state operating company Asfinag significantly more additional toll income of 2.5 million euros.
Minister refers to conversation in November
Transport Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) is not exactly enthusiastic about the demands from Salzburg. She is still rather covered: “We have now invited all actors to a table to look for possible solutions. The conversation will take place in November. “
There is also the demand on the table that in future the As Ast die must take over and finance the controls. In any case, a solution has to be found in November to reduce traffic congestion, said Regional Councilor Schnöll.
