The acquisition of land reserves to promote economic development in the urban area is one of the workhorses of Caen the sea (Calvados).
It is in this sense that the Urban Community will buy back fifteen hectares of land at Swedish giant Ikea, in Fleury-sur-Orne. But this is not the only site targeted by Caen la mer for future development. “The good news: what we had in land reserve sold faster than expected, as in the Lazzaro zone in Colombelles or in the Koenig district in Bretteville-sur-Odon”, specifies Joël Bruneau. Ditto in the business area of Soliers, to the south, or that of the Rives de l’Odon, in Verson, to the west, which is almost full.
“This shows the dynamism of our agglomeration”
The president of Caen la mer especially welcomes the regular job creation, except in 2020 during a period of health crisis. “If we lost around 2,000 jobs due to the Covid crisis in 2020, we recovered from the end of the first quarter of 2021 (private salaried jobs). This shows the dynamism of our agglomeration, ”he is satisfied.
If we want to support the dynamism of our main companies and our many growing SMEs (from 5 to 15 people, from 15 to 30 people, etc.), we need to provide them with spaces that allow them to ‘ensure their development.
Joël Bruneau also cites the examples of the Legallais company, which will set up its new logistics center in Saint-André-sur-Orne, “which takes a good part of the reserve in the town” or of the Gilbert laboratories which are planning to create a new plant for single-dose vials between Epron and Hérouville.
“It will be done in phases”
In view of this desired economic development, Caen la mer will use around thirty hectares in the coming years in Carpiquet and Bretteville-sur-Odon, between the Koenig district and the airport.
We already have spaces which are property of Caen la mer and which are still cultivated. These plots can gradually be used for business developments in this sector. There are about thirty hectares in the long term, but it will be done in phases.
A little further, in Bretteville-l’Orgueilleuse, the activity zone “still offers a reserve” in Caen la mer. The first part is almost full, but there is a second which could be developed. “We need to have a medium and long-term strategy to both anticipate in order to welcome businesses and allow them to develop, to create jobs and wealth, and at the same time to anticipate in order to be able to save land consumption. “.
