From Iceland — Icelandic Facebook groups: Family life – the true story
Published September 8, 2017
The main characteristic of Icelandic humor is self-respect, and nowhere on Facebook you will find a better example of this than in the group ‘True story’. Although the posts are written in Icelandic, they are heavy with pictures and videos that revolve around one central theme: everyday situations in your typical family home.
The group offers a variety of visual media, all of which will make you feel better about the way you live – compared to someone else. Get ready for images of The Things Under The Couch, piles of dirty laundry crammed into the corners of laundry rooms, and seven half-empty bottles of King Syrup on kitchen shelves.
True Story serves an important role. All too often, those of us with families lament the chaos of our living spaces; we beat ourselves up for being bad parents because our homes are in constant disarray and we wonder how everyone else can have perfectly clean and organized homes while we are constantly lacking. Facing the reality that, in reality, literally no family home is free of disorder and turmoil is comforting and reassuring.
If you’re a guilt-ridden parent, or a parent-to-be who sets impossibly high standards for you, this group is for you. It might also be the group for you if you’re not a parent but wondering if you’re up for it. True Story is a social service and we welcome it.
