The PSD and Portugal: challenges of hope | Opinion

1. The results of the municipal changes, more than for their raw values, are worth the political signal they transmit to Portuguese society, to public opinion and naturally to the parties and their leaders and militants. And the sign, despite the PS’s numerical victory, is a sign of hope for the construction of a solid and credible alternative, capable of mobilizing the Portuguese around a reformist project. A project built from the political spectrum that goes from the center (and even the center-left) to the moderate right, which brings together and integrates the many independents in this space who want to embrace the public cause. The natural place of the PSD, given its majority vocation, is more than the center: it extends from the center to the left and right. Playing with words, one could say that, more than the center, the PSD should occupy a central place in the Portuguese political panorama. And, therefore, an alternative will always have to be led and carried out by the PSD. This will be one of the first challenges that will be on the agenda. It is, in fact, important for the PSD to reaffirm and never give up its majority vocation, as the risk of progressive erosion of its identity persists. One thing is understandings, coalitions or alliances, another is “frenzy” that detract from the PSD’s watermark.
