The 18th Budapest Design Week starts in October

In 2021, the Budapest Design Weeket (BDW) will organize the National Office of Intellectual Property (SZTNH) and the Hungarian Design Council (MFT) for the 18th time, between October 8 and 17, on cultural and artistic events due to its main location. . will host the Société Budapest event center. The central theme of Budapest Design Week is New Standards: the focus of the events is on the “new normal” after the pandemic, ie the “beautiful new world”, in the design of which designers will play a decisive role.

“The last year and a half has proved that a pandemic situation is used in countless ways: everyday communication and shopping habits have changed, local products and commodities are an important crisis, social relations are gaining value, the role of belonging is becoming more important. decisive.

The current situation creates an exceptional opportunity to make the future more people-centered, human-scale, which will be an extremely important role for the designer, “said Gyula Pomázi, President of the National Office of Intellectual Property and the Hungarian Design Council.

Concerning the fields to be mapped by the series of events, Judit Osvárt, curator of BDW, said: “Budapest Design Week 2021 plans to go around the phenomenon of the“ beautiful new world ” design can be an efficient, flexible and versatile set of tools in creating a new society.

During these ten days, the new attitude will be reflected in other areas of social design, service design, product design, digital design, interior design and sustainability. “

Budapest Design Week realized hybrid data in view of the pandemic situation, as a positive result of which those who could not be physically present were able to join the programs, so in addition to offline, there are online programs this year as well. This year, too, it will be made up of two main types of programs in the series of events: its own and those organized by external partners and hosted by Budapest Design Week.

The opening exhibition of the series of events will be the central themed tour “New Standards” at the Société in Budapest, presenting the work of 30 young designers under the age of 30. Most of these are plans or prototypes, and are a good illustration of the new generation’s way of thinking about our future. The series of conversations related to the exhibition revolves around a number of topics, from the future of the automotive industry through the lock for leisure to the issue of augmented reality, all of which are examined in terms of design.

The Hungarian Design Awards and the Design Management Award will be presented on the opening night of Budapest Design Week. The exhibition, featuring the winners and the most outstanding applicants, will also be open to the public until the end of the festival. Depending on the epidemic situation, guided tours will also be held for those interested.

Similar to the practice of previous years, the Hungarian Design Council and its strategic partner Fabunio (Hungarian Wood and Furniture Industry Association) have been applying for complex professional programs for years. The event revolves around the type of design approach to the lives of individual creators and companies, the results they have achieved in reporting on awards, or the experiences and challenges of manufacturer-designer collaboration. As part of the program, Fabunio also organizes factory visits where those interested can get a behind-the-scenes look at the furniture industry.

Joining the initiative of the European Union, as a member of BEDA, the Hungarian Design Council and its partners will organize a New European Bauhaus workshop on October 12. The program with MA students — 3-3 students per higher education institution — is real, with students presenting their yellow assignments in the morning that day.

Traditionally, during the duration of Budapest Design Week, the popular design publication of the Hungarian Design Council, the Start Up Guide, also comes to life: the Start Up Guide Live is a multi-day, interactive, online series of lectures.

On October 12, the focus will be on how to make stores crisis-proof, forms of financing, and tracking market changes, and on October 13, the concept and importance of the customer experience, remarketing tools, and system thinking benefits will be the main topics. The lectures will be followed by discussions, and the program will be canceled later on Start Up Guide Live and Budapest Design Week.

On October 13 and 14, the Moholy-Nagy University of Arts (MOME), with the help of the BDW staff, will co-organize the first symposium and exhibition of the Social Design Network: units of several European higher education institutions established under the auspices of MOME in autumn 2020 and is the first professional collaboration in Europe on the subject. The international event, which revolves around the topic of social design, will begin with the opening of an exhibition on 13 October, followed by a one-day professional symposium on 14 October.

Every year, the popular series of events of Budapest Design Week is the Open Studios, which has – and in view of the pandemic situation, in accordance with the current safety regulations – both offline and online programs for those who want to gain insight into the workshop of Hungarian designers and design studios. The 18 welcome workshops offer a variety of presentations and workshops for those who want to learn more about the workflows from the design table to production, or want to hear the history of brands and collections straight from the creator.

As a strategic partner of BDW, the Hungarian Fashion and Design Agency (HFDA) is currently focusing on organizing 360 design exhibitions. The exhibition gives dozens of domestic designers the opportunity to introduce themselves at the Whale, now with a new concept, expanded programs, a stronger regional focus, and a key manager for the inherent services of sustainable solutions and innovation. In addition to the Hungarian artists, the events will also feature the professional talents of the V4 countries and roundtable discussions.

On the occasion of BDW, the new Budapest Design Map will also be published, the most comprehensive guide to design life in the capital.

However, Budapest Design Week 2021 is not only focused on the capital, as it offers about 150 different programs for connecting outdoor locations in Budapest and across the country, from design, creative business development, fashion and interior design to roundtable discussions, exhibitions, craft workshops and through city walks. This year, Szombathely, Sopron, Pécs and Debrecen will also join the series.
