POLITICS IN OWN WORDS Deputy Mayor of Prague 7, member of the City Council m of Prague for Prague on their Facebook on January 15 for the first round of the presidential elections

The direct election of the president affects our political system like a regularly recurring pestilential epidemic. Ultimately, however, she also left many interesting traces in our society. The first round of this year’s presidential elections was similarly successful in this regard.

From a purely human point of view, I was most interested in the contrast between Pavle and Jaroslav Bašta. A hero and a brave fighter against a totalitarian regime versus an aspiring regime prop. Shear. Fast forward thirty years. And what do we see? A moral wreck and a fighter for a totalitarian-genocidal regime versus a hero and a long-time supporter of democracy. It’s a movie! In short, the world is always in motion, changing and not black and white. He who dwells in the past will escape.

From a purely political point of view, I was most interested in Macron’s meeting with Babis. Macron knew well who he was meeting with, under what circumstances and what he would do. Yet he did it. why? Surely there was no friendship behind it, but a fat political deal. Probably at the level of the European Parliament. Who knows. A European liberal from the West offered a photo, a populist oligarch from somewhere in the East of his voter. Yes, the same voters who have been feeding their populist, anti-European bullshit for years. Without revealing to them that MEPs from the YES Movement are sitting in the club of Macron’s pro-European liberals and voting with them.

Both Pavel and Bašta have changed. One for the better, the other for the opposite. Only Babiš is the same all the time. An unscrupulous businessman willing to sell anything to anyone for personal gain. And then the direct election of the president is useless. The current one teaches us to forgive those who deserve it. And for that, it reveals to us at least one constant in the wildly changing world of the last few decades. Beautiful, isn’t it?

I am attaching a poster design for my planned presidential election campaign from our preschooler’s workshop. I should have gone for it, I think. A Pavel-Pavel final would be enough to relax.
