Around 290,000 “leisure” accidents were recorded in 2022, a 14% increase from 2021 and the highest number on record, SUVA said on Tuesday.
The insurance fund said the high rate was due to the lifting of pandemic restrictions, as well as one of the hottest summers on record, which created “perfect conditions for engaging in various open-air activities” such as skiing, cycling, and hiking.

According to the national weather service MeteoSuisse, the summer of 2022 was the second warmest since records began in 1864; Only the summer of 2003 was hotter.
According to SUVA, March 2022, which was also unusually warm and dry, was the month with the most sports and hiking accidents.
The 55-64 age group saw the largest increase in breakdowns compared to pre-pandemic times, with the number of accidents involving them increasing by 15%.
Taking into account accidents at work, the total number of accidents recorded by SUVA in 2022 rose to 490,000, which corresponds to an increase of 9.7% compared to the previous year.
