Radev and Vucic initiated the construction of the gas connection between Bulgaria and Serbia
The presidents of Bulgaria and Serbia, Rumen Radev and Alexander Vucic, started the construction of the gas connection between the two countries on Bulgarian territory. Rumen Radev defined the construction of the interconnector as an important step for deepening bilateral relations between Sofia and Belgrade, as well as for the entire region.
“This project is an example of how our sustainable cooperation with the EC leads to mutual benefits not only for our countries. It provides new opportunities for the region through real diversification and security of supply. It is an example of successful implementation of the European strategy for affordable and secure energy. Because the success of Serbia in maintaining and building new connections with neighboring countries with this interconnector is already a success for Bulgaria as well. That’s why we get opportunities for expanded access to European markets”, said Radev.
The gas connection, which will be able to transport blue fuel in both directions, is expected to be put into operation in October this year. The capacity of the interconnector will be 1.8 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year. Bulgartransgaz Executive Director Vladimir Malinov shares the importance of the project for the region.
“First of all, it gives Serbia the opportunity for alternative sources of natural gas – namely the liquefied gas terminals in Greece, where we also participate, since the Serbian state has reserved capacity at the terminal in Alexandropoulis, and access through the agreement in Bulgaria, yes They use all LPG terminals in Turkey. On the other hand, since it is two-way, it will give Bulgaria the opportunity to access the Central European markets and thus ensure better prices and diversification of sources”, he explained.
