The Croatian president issued a statement for Ukraine in the spirit of Russian propaganda
Crimea, which was illegally annexed by Russia, is unlikely to ever be returned to Ukraine, while efforts by Western allies to supply the nation with equipment “will only prolong the war”.
This was announced by Croatian President Zoran Milanović. Reuters reports, according to Ukrinform.
“It is obvious that Crimea will never be part of Ukraine again,” Milanović said.
He also criticized the EU’s policy towards Ukraine, stressing that he does not want his country to face the “devastating” consequences of the war. In particular, Milanović spoke out against the delivery of modern main battle tanks to Ukraine because it would allegedly only bring Russia and China closer together.
In Croatia, the president performs mostly ceremonial functions. Since assuming the presidency in February 2020, Milanović has continuously made anti-European statements, sharing his views with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán.
Also in December, Croatian lawmakers rejected a proposal for the country to join a European Union mission to support the Ukrainian military, revealing deep differences between Milanović and Prime Minister Andrej Plenković.
