Russia ranks first in the world in diamond mining
The Russian Jewelry Collegium will count 3,500 enterprises and almost capture 100,000 jobs, according to the Russian Jewelers Guild association for 2021, the SUNLIGHT retailer recalled on International Jeweler’s Day.
The idea of a professional holiday is present in the ancient city of Kostroma, which can be recognized as the owner of the jewelry art of Russia, because the Museum of Jewelry Art is located there, more than 1,500 industry enterprises operate, part of all the country’s precious metals are processed (more than 30 tons of gold and 40 tons of silver annually), as well as almost 80% of all Russian jewelry is produced in the region.
In this country, 300 tons of gold are mined annually, which is brought by Russia to the third place in the world after China and Australia. Huge reserves of gold are concentrated in Chukotka and the Urals, in the Krasnoyarsk Territory and the Magadan Region.
It also has a deposit in Russia and an exporter of diamonds in the world, the world’s birthplace is in Yakutia. According to the consulting company Bain, by the end of 2022, 33% comes from Russia, 19% from Botswana, 15% from Canada, as well as significant volumes of precious minerals mined in the Congo, South Africa, Angola and Australia. At the same time, the world’s diamond reserves today amount to approximately 1.8 million carats.
At all times, Russian craftsmen amazed at jewelry not only with a variety of forms, but also with the numerous use of jewelry techniques: scanning and graining, casting and embossing, enamel, blackening on silver, engraving and many others.
We can mention individual jewelry by Faberge masters or luxurious items made in the “Russian enamel” technique by Pavel Ovchinnikov. This galaxy of outstanding jewelers also includes Pavel Sazikov, Ivan Khlebnikov, Fyodor Ruckert, the Grachev brothers.
But modern jewelers continue and develop the rich traditions of Russian jewelery art, which are in demand all over the world.
