failures to rescue, 27 reports them in 2022. A decrease compared to previous years
The last case is on a Sunday, when the driver of a car hit one straight scooter without stopping to ascertain the conditions of the wounded. A phenomenon, that of the omission of aid, which the law punishes heavily, going as far as arrest in the most serious cases.
In the report of the Local Police of Rimini, last year I was 27 people reported for violating article 189 of the Highway Code. The most striking case last October when a van hit a car and after two kilometers caused a second accidentwith the driver found with a alcohol content much higher than 1.5 mg/l.
Of these 27 complaints, in 19 cases were disposed towards unknown persons, as it was not possible to trace the perpetrator of the failed rescue. A serious phenomenon, which however records a significant contraction compared to 2021when they were 43 people reportedand even more compared to 2019, when there were 55 reports following an accident.
The 2022 figure is slightly higher than that of 2020 (24), in the midst of the pandemic, with the prolonged period of blockade and travel restriction. For the driver who fled but then decides, within 24 hours following the accident, to make himself available to the police, the measure of arrest does not take place.
“This is a serious phenomenon, which our Corps continues to monitor carefully – said the commissioner to the Local Police Jury Magrini – Failure to provide assistance exposes the perpetrator to far more serious sanctions than those intended to be avoided. It should also be taken into account that the search for drivers of vehicles who lose track of themselves requires a complex and complex investigation activity, which includes analysis of video camera footage, databases, collection of testimonies. An important use of time and human resources, which however we will continue to face”.
