Belgium is looking for its nuclear future
“Small modular reactors” or SMRs are presented as the ideal complement to renewable energies. Could they take over from Doel and Tihange? Our country wants in any case to try to slip into the race.

VSOn Tuesday 31 January, the Tihange 2 nuclear reactor will begin its final shutdown phase. It is the second unit to bow out under the 2003 nuclear exit law – Doel 3 was shut down on September 23, 2022. The five other reactors in the Belgian nuclear fleet will experience the same fate in 2025. Then, if all goes well according to the terms of the agreement concluded in mid-January between Engie and the government, Doel 4 and Tihange 3 should make their “comeback” in November 2026, for ten additional years of operation.
