Top 10 mistakes not to make with curly hair
There are fights that not everyone is able to understand… That of beautiful, well-defined curls without a foamy cardboard effect is a good example! Yes, on this earth, there is a formidable gang, often called “the loop team” or the “loop crew”. Their but? Get rid of frizz, unwanted effects, and weaves that make their life a little too much! To help them, here is a little reminder of the mistakes not to make with your beautiful curly hair. #SaveTheCurls.
Brush them dry
Rookie mistake! We DO NOT do that! It’s one of the golden rules of the bouclé gang: detangling is only during the washing routine. Brushing them dry breaks up the curls and gives a not crazy foamy effect. If you don’t want to detangle your wet hair (because that too, it damages beautiful hair), you can brush them dry, just before your shampoo.
Do not hydrate or feed them
Poorly hydrated hair = frizz galore, ill-defined curls, frothy effect, unkempt hair and crazy knots. Not feeding them = dull and brittle hair or split ends. Not very engaging!
Do not use styling products
Big mistake! They moisturize your hair, but above all allow you to give a nice shape to the curl, then to fix it.
Or conversely, put too much
It takes a happy medium between 0 product, and too many products! Your treatments, especially those without rinsing, must above all not go so far as to soak your hair: we distribute sparingly (who is that one? lol)! If you load your hair too much, you will end up with a cardboard, greasy, foamy or stunted effect. We dose, and we limit ourselves to one or two hazelnuts (even if it means adding more, if necessary)!
Do not apply conditioner
The conditioner takes care of your curly hair. It provides quick care, nourishes your hair, and makes detangling easier. If you are part of the “I brush on wet hair” team, it is also advisable to untangle it only after having done your treatment. To take care of your curls in depth, do not hesitate to also make a deep mask per week.
Rinse them with hot water
I KNOW: it’s easier said than done (especially in the middle of winter). But here it is… The best ally for tight, well-defined curls is… Cold water. Sorry. You do what you want with this information. But you have to choose. Either you like your hot water and you assume your hair is flattered, or you have written a space throat, but with resplendent hair! Up to you.
Make them live with hair attacks of all kinds
This is also true for straight, wavy, frizzy hair… In short, for all types of hair that exist. We avoid as much as possible the straightening iron and other smoothing techniques, the very hot hair dryer, the chemicals or the discolorations which damage your beautiful mane by denaturing the hair fiber. In the case of curly hair, the curls retain their definition, their volume, and become dehydrated.
… And dryers without a diffuser
BUT IS IT WRONG OR WHAT? GET ME THIS DIFFUSER BEFORE I GET RED WITH ANGER! If you want to avoid frizz while defining your curls well, you must dry at low temperature, with a diffuser! In addition to giving a nice movement to your curls, it allows the heat to be distributed so that it is not applied directly to a strand. To make this step easier, you can start by pre-drying your hair with a microfiber towel.
Sleep with your hair down
The best method if you want to wear a cut all flattened the next day! If this is not the case, we think of doing a nice big pineapple bun before going to sleep. Going to bed with your hair down will simply crush your curls and break their shape. If you can afford it, also treat yourself to a satin pillowcase, as all Hollywood stars do. In addition to being very chic, it prevents dehydration of your hair.
Use any hair ties
It’s a big nooooo (as they say across the Channel)! Classic elastics will damage your hair and break the dynamics of your curls. To keep a nice curly hair, we opt for spiral elastics or big darlings! Plus, it’s prettier. What else actually? (As we always say across the Channel.)
