Istituto Bandini Siena, planted a ficus sprout from Giovanni Falcone’s tree
A ficus sprout, known as the Falcone tree, coming directly from Palermo, from the plant that grows in front of the house of the judge killed by the mafia. The Carabinieri of the nucleus of biodiversity handed over to the Sallustio Bandini Higher Education Institute the symbol of the fight against Cosa Nostra, a shoot that the students planted. The delivery to the head teacher Alfredo Stefanelli took place in recent days with a ceremony which saw, in the Aula magna, the presence of the Prefect of Siena Maria Forte, the colonel of the Carabinieri Carlo Chiavacci biodiversity unit, Giovanna Vannetti contact person for the Libera Toscana Association, the professor Francesco Fasano, coordinator of the ‘sustainable Bandini’ project and in connection with the former magistrate and honorary president of Libera Gian Carlo Caselli.
“Our institute has always pursued the values of legality and the awareness of the younger generations towards the issue of the fight against the mafia. This day – explains the school director Alfredo Stefanelli – has a strong symbolic value precisely during the weeks in which the state has strongly reaffirmed the principle of justice. Thanks to the nucleus of the Carabinieri and to the testimonies of our prestigious guests who have contributed to making a contribution to the formation of a strong civic sense, of the institutions and of the State for our boys “.
“A shoot of the ficus known as Falcone’s tree, a shoot taken from the plant that grows in front of Giovanni Falcone’s house in Palermo, as a symbol of the fight against the mafia – said Professor Francesco Fasano – We had left him a little place and now finally, thanks to the Carabinieri who handed it over to us, we will keep it by planting it”.
The project is part of the broader path on sustainability, coordinated by Professor Fasano, who has already seen sixty plants planted in the school garden, among trees and shrubs. Among the chosen plants are Tuscan cypress shrubs, viburnum, privet, boxwood, holly, linden, laurel, Turkey oak, holm oak and maple.
Also in collaboration with the Carabinieri, a recognition band was affixed and the plants were georeferenced with an annual estimate of the CO2 absorbed. Since the old site inside the perimeter of the city walls, the Istituto Bandini has linked its image to the presence of trees. In fact, in front of the seat, two palm trees were placed. The planting of tree essences, concomitant with an internal dissemination action, will guarantee the absorption of CO2 atmosphere for the normal carbon cycle and will provide the educational opportunity to emphasize the fight against climate change (CO absorption2), protection from hydrogeological instability (plant stabilization action), protection of biodiversity.
The Sallustio Bandini Higher Education Institute of Siena thus becomes a ‘entirely sustainable’ and ‘plastic free’ school and launches, in line with the objectives of Agenda 2030, the training offer plan on environmental sustainability. The three-year project was structured in a basic didactic phase, in which the elementary notions of sustainable use of resources (water and raw materials) were transmitted, and a second didactic-seminar phase in which the students with moments of deepening.
