Hanover. January is a classic clean-up month. The attic, basement, garage, office with desk and odds and ends drawer are all possible, at least in theory. In practice, the attic is out of the question because it’s far too cold there now. My wife only tackled the cellar in the summer. We don’t own a garage, and if we did, I wouldn’t touch it.

Cleaning up a garage poses problems, you ask the American President Joe Biden. He found secret documents in his garage that were so secret that no one knew they existed. Now he’s in trouble, and he’s the only one. His wife is out of the loop, because in Biden’s age group the garage is considered protected territory where the woman has no business. No one will ever know what would have come to light if Ms. Biden had searched.

I now found batteries, pens, rubber bands and cords of all kinds, half-full matchboxes, keys that couldn’t be assigned to a lock, glasses cleaning cloths, beer mats, toothpicks, ointment with an expiry date of January 2013, adhesive plasters that probably won’t stick anymore, tacks, a small Swiss Army knife, fridge magnets, flower scissors, a crooked corkscrew, coins from all over the world, Christmas postcards (hand-painted), two small nutcrackers, instructions for use for all devices – and that was only the result of a rough overview.

According to Duden, odds and ends are worthless stuff. That may be so, but some things only revealed their worth after they were thrown away. And I often found things in the drawer that I needed after all, I can’t think of an example at the moment. I pushed them shut again. It’s still working, so there’s no real need for action. January will soon be over.
