Fast drivers in Zurich: Radar flashed 350 times in one day
Radar flashed 350 times in one day
In Albisrieden, the city police set up a very late speed radar in a 30 km/h zone.
After the tragic fatal accident involving a kindergarten teacher at Escher-Wyss-Platz, the population of Zurich is sensitized to cars driving too fast. For example, the city police set up a mobile speedometer in a 30 km/h zone on an arterial road in Albisrieden after information from the population.
Apparently, the residents observed correctly. According to a spokesman for the city police, the box flashed over 350 drivers or motorcyclists who were traveling faster than 30 km/h in the first 24 hours.
With a minimal fine of 40 francs, the radar at this location flushed at least 14,000 francs into the city coffers on the first day of its use alone.
Local residents suspect a defect
What is special is why the city police checked the speed camera on site after just one day. Triggers were again tips from the neighborhood. The residents suspected that there was something technically wrong with the tin policeman, since he flashed his flashes almost every minute.
A resident speaks in one Report from «20 minutes» from a thunderstorm. His reader video shows how the device was quickly and constantly triggered shortly before 10 p.m. in the evening. As the police spokesman confirmed, everything was technically fine, only cars or motorbikes that were going too fast were flashed.
According to the police, the mobile metal police officers are always set up on the basis of information from the population or from authorities or schools. As a rule, they remain there until the number of speed drivers has reduced to a normal level – which usually takes between one and several weeks. The lightning box in Albisrieden is currently still on site.
Income of 60 million francs
Fines are an afterthought for the city of Zurich. As police spokeswoman Judith Hödl says about “20 minutes”, the city of Zurich took in around 60 million francs in 2021. A total of a good 340,000 fines were imposed for speeding, plus a good 82,000 fines for ignoring a red light and a good 410,000 parking fines.
