In Hungary’s largest Fidesz-led city, the city management’s imposition of the Chinese CATL factory, which was planned without the involvement of the locals and uses environmentally polluting substances, has sparked anger on a scale not seen in a long time.

The demonstration against the battery factory planned for the southern economic zone of the city started at 9:30 am, the meeting was held in the main square of Mikepércs, which is adjacent to Debrecen. The main organizer of the demonstration, Enikő Gyöngy-Tóth says that the event is peaceful and non-partisan.
Around 200 people set off from the village on the bike path leading to the big city, accompanied by the police. The march was mostly attended by people from Mikepércs and Debrecen, but demonstrators from other parts of the country also appeared.
Arriving at Petőfi Square in Debrecen, 400 people were already present at the event; many people stood in a row and greeted the participants with applause. The crowd arrived at the city’s main square, Kossuth Square, at 12:30 p.m. as planned, after walking the 12-kilometer distance between the two settlements. By that time, the crowd had swelled to 1,000 people.
The main organizer of the event, Enikő Gyöngy-Tóth, emphasized that, in her opinion, the investment threatens the health of her family and others, as well as the environment. He said that the movement was organized by a group of local mothers and that no political organization was behind them.
He talked about the fact that he now lives on his parents’ former plot. And if battery factories are built in every part of the country, then the country will turn into a wasteland.
“If this monster is built, what will become of it? Will there still be wheat fields here to harvest? Will there be potable water here? Will there be lakes where people can go fishing, forests where they can walk and let their thoughts out?
Will Debrecen and its surroundings have a future if everyone leaves?”
