Thessaloniki: Fewer overnight stays in hotels in 2022 compared to 2019 | News about the Economy
With a reduction in overnight stays compared to 2019, but an increase in the average room rate, closed in 2022 for the hotels at Thessalonikiaccording to data published today by the city’s Hotel Association (EXTH).
The Greeks were once again in first place in terms of overnight stays, while as the Israelis emerged as the first nationality among the foreign visitorsfor the first time in three years.
A 16.54% increase was also recorded in the overnight stays of Ukrainians, since Thessaloniki was among the areas that hosted refugees, mainly during the first months of 2022.
More specifically, in 2022 they took place in the city’s hotels 2,125,433 overnight stays by Greek and foreign visitors, a number reduced by 12.96% compared to 2019last “normal” tourist year before the onset of the covid-19 pandemic, during which 2,442,020 overnight stays were recorded.
“Nevertheless, moderate optimism is caused in the hotel industry of the region by the figures of research carried out on a monthly basis by the tourist studies and research company “GBR Consulting” on behalf of EXTH, which show that in 2022, compared to 2019, there was 14.6% increase in Average Rate (ARR) as well as a very small 2% increase in RevPar (Revenue per Room)with this indicator amounting to 56.32 euros for 2022″, it is pointed out in a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In detail, according to the statistics of the Thessaloniki Hotel Association, Greek citizens were once again at the top of the nationalities, with their overnight stays reaching 1,017,614, a number corresponding to 47.88% of the totalbut it was down by 9.11% compared to 2019.
The remaining nationalities showed a total decrease compared to 2019: In 2022, 1,107,819 overnight stays by foreign visitors were recorded, number reduced by 16.23% compared to 2019, during which 1,322,438 overnight stays were recorded (in absolute numbers the overnight stays of foreign visitors decreased by 214,619).
The first place in the table of foreign nationalities was occupied again, after three years, by Israeli citizens, with 126,247 overnight stays. However, in 2019 this nationality had recorded 185,946 overnight stays (a drop of 32.11% and in absolute numbers a decrease of 59,699 overnight stays).
A decrease in overnight stays compared to 2019 was also observed in several of the remaining foreign nationalities, which complete the top twenty for 2022: Cypriots (-33.57%, decrease of 39,932 nights), Italians (-29.85%, decrease of 18,695 nights), visitors from Turkey (-27.89%, decrease of 16,874 nights), but also of the British (-11 ). .23%) and Bulgarians (-9.05%). On the contrary, an increase was recorded – always in relation to 2019 – in the overnight stays of Romanians (24.05%), as well as visitors from North Macedonia (14.14%) and from the USA (13.45%).
Meanwhile, despite Thessaloniki’s continuous effort to approach European pricing standardsin the benchmarking between it and ten other European cities of a similar size (Antwerp, Birmingham, Cologne, Dusseldorf, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Budapest, Hamburg, Manchester, Salzburg), Thessaloniki remained2, last place for both the average price , as well as in revenue per available room.
