Berlin (dpa / bb) – After five wins, the Eisbären Berlin have had to accept a setback in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL). On Friday evening, the champions lost to the Kölner Haie 3:4 (1:1, 2:1, 0:1, 0:1) after extra time. Goals from Frank Mauer, Marcel Noebels and Giovanni Fiore are only enough for the capital city’s one point because they make some serious mistakes.
In front of 13,828 spectators in the arena at the Ostbahnhof, the home side started powerfully and had some clear scoring chances in the first minutes of the game. The people of Cologne took advantage of the fact that they left them unused. David McIntyre scored after the Berlin back line was careless. However, the hosts were undeterred and, thanks to a strong one-on-one action by Mauer, were out before the first break.
After the restart, it only takes 86 seconds for Noebels to frequently lead the capital city. In a varied encounter, the classic Eisbären professional Landon Ferraro managed to equalize for Cologne after a counterattack, but only a little later the Berliners declared with a power play goal from Fiore. In the final section, the guests forced extra time through a goal from Mark Olver, in which Nicholas Bailen ensured the victory for the Rhinelanders.
