Will casinos soon be banned in Liechtenstein?
Will the boom end in the «Las Vegas of the Alps»? The people of Liechtenstein decide on the future of gambling dens
Moratorium or ban via constitutional amendment: Liechtenstein votes on January 29 to exit the casino business. The arguments of casino opponents and supporters.
Almost 40,000 residents in eleven communities, but soon ten casinos? With the revised Gaming Act of April 7, 2016, a development occurred in Liechtenstein that could not have been foreseen. The neighboring country, which is now known as the “Las Vegas of the Alps”, has the highest density in the world with one gambling den per 8,000 inhabitants. And that’s not all: Today, five casinos are in operation, three more are in the approval process, and another two companies are said to be in the starting blocks. For the IG Volksmeinung, that’s “far too many casinos” – the opponents of gambling are now demanding the exit from the casino business. The state parliament rejected the popular initiative in November 2022: Therefore, there will now be a referendum on January 29th.
