Free swimming in Antwerp due to cyber attack (Antwerp)
The cyber attack on the city of Antwerp has one advantage: anyone who goes swimming in the municipal swimming pools can do so for free. That will probably continue to be the case. “It is still a matter of time to see when the system will work again,” says alderman of Sport Peter Wouters (N-VA).
A number of systems, for example to consult the customer base and subscriptions and to open the gates, are out of service. Swimmers have therefore been able to take a dip in municipal swimming pools for free for almost two months, according to ATV.
“The Digipolis urban IT service continues to work on the technical part and an interim solution,” says Wouters. “It’s a matter of waiting to see when it will be there.” The ships cannot say how great the financial loss is for the city of Antwerp now that bathers do not have to pay.
An initial estimate of the financial consequences of the cyber attack on the city mentioned 70 million euros. For example, no parking fees can be issued for a while or people can be fined for entering the low-emission zone with a polluted car.
