A Luxembourg-Saarbrücken rail link for 2035?
To reach Luxembourg directly from Saarbrücken, you currently have to fall back on the car or the bus. For the time being, there is no direct train linking the Saar capital to Luxembourg station. Many fronts want the creation of a direct rail line, without change. In an interview with the Saarlandischer Rundfunk (SR), the Minister for Mobility, François Bausch (Déi Gréng), indicated that a Saarbrücken-Luxembourg link by France was achievable by 2035.
And the minister already has his own idea about the route: the direct trains would pass through Metz, but that would involve modernizing the existing line, as reported by the RS. However, he considers that a route via Bouzonville, as has already been mentioned, would be difficult to envisage.
For the time being, the Saarland Ministry of Transport has not yet drawn up a concrete project for a connection via Metz. According to information from RS, Saarland Transport Minister Petra Berg (SPD) and François Bausch plan to continue discussions on this subject in March. During their meeting, the Minister-President of the Saarland, Anke Rehlinger (SPD), and the Prime Minister of Luxembourg Xavier Bettel (DP) had already expressed their desire to strengthen relations between the Saarland and Luxembourg, in particular by committing together in favor of a better rail connection of the Grand Duchy to the German railway network.
