Patriots already in Poland, the systems will contribute to the protection of NATO’s eastern flank
Patriot systems have arrived in Poland, which will strengthen the Polish air defense and will contribute to the protection of NATO’s eastern flank, the Bundeswehr announced on Tuesday.
By placing an air defense force in Poland, “Germany will increase its contribution to solidarity with NATO allies in Eastern Europe.” Bundeswehr soldiers will use the Patriot system “to help the chronic Polish airspace and external NATO integrated air defense to the eastern flank,” the Bundeswehr operation wrote.
The size of the German unit “is about 350 soldiers. If necessary, it can be limited to up to 650 soldiers. The duration of the mission will be properly coordinated with our allied partner – Poland. The unit is commanded by Colonel Jörg Sievers” – the German army announced.
After a missile launch on Polish territory in November, Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht and her Polish counterpart Mariusz Błaszczak agreed that German Patriot systems should be stationed in Poland. Germany will provide Ukraine with one of the officers of the Patriot system to help the country defend against Russian attacks.
