Christian holidays are Norwegian culture. It is absurd to remove them.
The holidays are traditions that bind society together.
Young Left want to abolish the Christian holidays and replace them with days off that you can take whenever you want. The debate has flourished after Denmark is now discussing abolishing a public holiday. If we do as Unge Venstre suggests, we will erase an important part of Norway’s history, mine and your cultural heritage.
Norway is built on and founded on Christian values. Ever since the Christianization of Norway and through unions and world wars and right up to now, the Christian cultural heritage has been the foundation of Norwegian society as we know it today.
Free at the same time
The holidays are traditions that bind society together. Today we live in a society which is changing and which is unstable. Then we need something that is stable and that is common to all of us. This is exactly what the Christian holidays are. Most people have time off at the same time.
If you abolish public holidays so that people can take days off when it suits them, you will firstly lose some of the finest things about the Norwegian cultural heritage. Secondly, it creates uncertainty for workers and employers. Employers must immediately approach the labor market in a completely different way. A large proportion of workers are no longer guaranteed to be free on given days, but that also makes it unpredictable, for example, for families with children to plan.
Alcohol sales
One argument Unge Venstre uses is that banning the sale of alcohol on these holidays is a survival from another time. If one of the purposes of abolishing public holidays is to make alcohol available more often than today, it is better to advocate for changing the rules for alcohol sales. There is a significant difference between wanting to change the rules for alcohol sales and wiping out Norwegian cultural heritage. One may well be in favor of a more liberal alcohol policy without this having to come at the expense of the Christian holidays.
Public holidays are one of the finest things that Norwegian society is built on, and it must continue to be so.
