There will be a new biotope in the floodplain of Kunratické Potok in Prague’s Braník
The City Hall of Prague 4 started the construction of a so-called biotope, i.e. a water area with plants and animals, in the floodplain of the Kunratický stream in Braník in Za Mlýnem Street. The aim is to create a haven for organizations linked to clean water and will serve to establish species diversity. The biotope will be fed from a nearby well and will then flow into the Kunratické stream, it will not be suitable for swimming, said councilor Tomáš Hrdinka (ANO). According to him, the town hall will pay for the functioning of the biotope from its budget. The cost of building the biotope is 6.9 million crowns, it will be completed this year. “It could be done by the beginning of summer, including subsequent vegetation adjustments,” said the councilor.
The water surface will have an area of 240 square meters, its maximum depth will be 1.8 meters. The volume of the water reservoir will be 350 cubic meters. Unlike the biotope on Lhotka, this one will not be intended for swimming.
In addition to nature protection, the surroundings of the biotope will be used for relaxation. Next to the benches, there will also be an information panel that will inform passers-by about the adaptation measures in the urban landscape and the climate commitment of the capital, which was accepted by the city representatives in recent years and according to which Prague wants to reduce CO2 emissions by 45 percent by 2030.
A biotope is an artificially created lake, on the bottom of which a film with drainage is placed. The water in it is not chemically treated, nor is it so-called dead, but it is purified with the help of root systems and microorganisms that live in it. There are swimming biotopes in the metropolis, for example, in Lhotka or Radotín.
