2022 was the hottest year in Portugal since 1931
In 2022, similarly to what happened in Europe, the average air temperature in Portugal mainland was higher than the 30-year average.
Temperature
According to Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere, IPMAin mainland Portugal, in the year 2022, the mean value of mean air temperature, 16.64 °C, was 1.38 °C above the 1971-2000 normal value, being the highest since 1931.
Since 1931, one of the 30 warmest years in mainland Portugal, 22 occurred after 1990 and 15 after 2000.
the value average maximum air temperature, 22.32 °C, was the 2nd highest value since 1931 with an anomaly of +1.82 °C compared to the normal value. The year with the highest average maximum air temperature was 2017, with 22.82 °C. The last 14 years have always registered positive anomalies.
The year 2022 was classified as the hottest in the last 92 years in mainland Portugal.
The average value of the minimum air temperature, 10.96 °Cwas the 4th highest value since 1931 with an anomaly of +0.94 °C compared to the normal value. The year with the highest average value of the minimum air temperature was 1997, with 11.26 °C.
The lowest value of the minimum air temperature was -7.5 °C, registered in mirandela on the 30th of January and highest value of the maximum temperature, 47.0 °C, occurred in pinion on the 14th of July.
Throughout the year some records of maximum and minimum temperature were surpassed. In July, absolute maximum temperature extremes were recorded in 40 stations and in 21 stations the minimum temperatures reached record highs.
Precipitation
Still according to the IPMA, in the year 2022 the average value of total annual precipitation, 797.6 mm, was lower than the 1971-2000 normal value with an anomaly of -84.5 mm. Precipitation values higher than those recorded in 2022 have occurred in 35% of the years since 1931.
During the year 2022, the months of March, September, October, November and December record the values of higher than normalhighlighting the month of December with an anomaly of +105 mm compared to the 1971-2000 normal value. Especially in the month of December there were periods of heavy rain.
The highest amount of precipitation in 24 hours, 110.6 mm, was recorded at the Lisbon/Gago Coutinho on the 13th of December. In December, rainfall was recorded in 4 seasons.
In the remaining months of the year precipitation was always less than the normal valuewith negative anomalies. The largest deviations from the average occurred in January and Februarywith anomalies of -110mm and -90mm, respectively.
